Seasonal Knowledge Project: Update 3

khalawi

The rich poetic tradition of Nabaṭī poetry and older poetic traditions in the Arabian Peninsula has much of value on star lore and knowledge of the seasons. There are several major poets. One of these is Muḥammad al-Qāḍī, who was born in ‘Anīza in 1224/1809 and died in the same place in 1285/1868. I am currently translating this poem (which has several variant readings) for a journal article. I have been helped by commentaries available online, such as https://sites.google.com/site/falakiyat/alqadhi. Another important early poet was Rāshid al-Khalāwī, with numerous sources online (e.g., http://www.albreah.com/vb/t8577.html) as well as in published diwans.

This website documents the results of a Qatar Foundation National Priority Research Program Grant (NPRP8-992-5-133) entitled “Intangible Heritage of Seasonal Navigation and Time Telling in the Arab Gulf ,” conducted in 2016-2017. The Lead Principal Investigator (LPI) is Dr. Daniel Martin Varisco (Qatar University), assisted by Dr. Roxani Margariti (Emory University), Dr. Andre Gingrich (University of Vienna), Dr. Ali al-Shawi (Qatar University), with Dr. Saad Sowayan and Dr. Harriet Nash as consultants.
